World war 1
The killing of Franz Ferdinand, nephew of Emperor Franz Josef
and heir to the Austria-Hungarian Empire was a cause for World War 1
starting.
Austria-Hungary waited to declare war though until they knew
they would have help from Germany.
July 28, 1914 Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia, within a
week then Russia, Belgium, France, Great Britain, and Serbia had joined Serbia
against Austria- Hungary and Germany and World War 1 began.
The United States did not want to join at first and wanted to
stay neutral. Then when the Germans sunk the Lusitania on May 7, 1915 the United
States decided to take action and join in the war with the Allied Powers.
The United States officially declared war on April 6, 1917.
Central Powers: Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Ottoman Empire
Allied Powers: Great Britain, France, Russia, Italy, Japan, and
the United States
In World War 1 both sides fought using Trench Warfare, because
if this fighting style the war dragged on for a long time. The war lasted from
1914 to 1918 with the Allied Powers victorious.
New weapons used in World War 1 were the machine gun, gas planes, tanks, and torpedoes.
With Soldiers always being in trenches when it would rain the
water would build up and they would have to stand in the water for days until it
dried up, because of this the soldiers would get trench
foot.
There was 9 million people killed and21 million people wounded.
World War 1 was also called “the war to end allwars”
After the war the Treaty of Versailles was signed in 1919 which determined post-war borders from Europe to the Middle East, established the League of Nations as a national peace organization and punished Germany for its aggression with reparations and loss of their territories.
The effects of the Treaty of Versailles lead to Adolf Hitler
taking over Germany which leads to World War 2.
